Aqara Smart Hub M2: Versatile Smart Home Bridge with Some Drawbacks
The Aqara Smart Hub M2 offers a comprehensive solution for integrating various smart devices into your home ecosystem. With support for alarm systems, IR remote control, and home automation, it seamlessly connects with popular voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and IFTTT. Overall, I found its performance to be commendable, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of managing smart devices. However, there were a couple of disappointments. Firstly, the reliance on a micro USB input feels outdated, especially in a market where USB-C is becoming the standard. Secondly, the absence of a white color option limits its aesthetic compatibility with different home setups. Despite these drawbacks, the Aqara Smart Hub M2 remains a solid choice for those looking to streamline their smart home experience.

This hub makes a solid connection to my 2.4 gHz WiFi network and provides good coverage.

Most (and so far for me, all) Aqara smart items bridged through it can be addressed in HomeAssistant through the HomeKit integration. No need to bother with Matter - unless you want to. The IR blaster, however, only functions with the phone app and does not expose paired items with HomeAssistant - and that it's only minus in my opinion. However, as I view the IR blaster as a nice bonus, and not core to the product I didn't dock the item a star in my rating. However, if the IR blaster were to be exposed - now, that would be something special!

Devices are easy to set up and this hub performs a good as advertised. It's price point makes it a good choice for any home wanting to add good Zigbee coverage for the Aqara ecosystem. Nice.

Also, note that I run this hub alongside another Zigbee coordinator (a USB stick) and both networks function without issue even though my 2.4 gHz spectrum is pretty saturated with competing networks. Again, nice!

I was annoyed that I had to buy another Zigbee hub to get a piece of tech to work better, but the hub does work as expected. My presence sensor works much more quickly now, and it is integrated with Home Assistant on my local network. I haven't tested the IR transmitter on the hub yet, but I am expecting adequate performance. I think it is important to have local control of your devices so that you can still control your home when the internet goes out. It's possible that I could have tied the presence sensor to a generic Zigbee dongle I already had, but the hub was much quicker and easier to deal with. I am looking forward to industry getting the Matter standard working so that we don't keep having to deal with annoyances like this.

I did not use the WiFi connectivity. I preferred using the wired connection. Attaching the device to Apple HomeKit was easy. Though, a little disappointment with the integration to HomeKit : this device seems turning around a Security System.

Not like the Hue bridge from Philips, you don’t find your hub. And if you delete from HomeKit the security system, all the sensor disappears. This is a bad integration.

Also, temperature sensors that are added on the hub are shown in the same room as the hub. Be sure to name your sensor accordingly to their respective room if you want to know where these are installed.
Conclusion, the hub is doing its job, but very poor integration to Apple HomeKit.

No room sync between the Aqara Home app and the Apple Home app.

The Aqara Home app seems having less functionalities regarding the Xiaomi app which is supposed to be compatible.

No sensor battery status on the Aqara Home app. Need to check this on the Apple Home app.

A big effort for Apple HomeKit integration is required.

PS, after the sensors have been added, it’s impossible to move them to another room. I therefore deleted the hub from HomeKit and reattached it in a room called Aqara (in Home App). Maybe it is possible while you’re adding the sensors to add them one by one and move the hub from room to room before adding the sensor, and maybe the sensor will be attached to the proper room. Something to try if you have time.

So let me say upfront that I am only one day in so far. If you like me bought this for Home Assistant and you have zero experience with either system let me save you a lot of headache. Link the hub to Home Assistant before you link the hub to the Aqara app. Or maybe set it up and link all the sensors to it. Remove from the app then link to Home Assistant then link back to the app. I had it setup on the app before I linked it on Home Assistant and it would not let me link it no matter what I tried. I looked all over reddit and just couldn't find a solution. Then just happened to try removing from the app and linking it to Home Assistant alone and it worked like a charm. So far only have the hub and one button. I set up the button so that it turns two fans in our bedroom along with controlling the lights. Simple stuff. Just getting my feet wet in preparation for a home we are building right now. I love how simple it was to do the IR blaster automation in the Aqara app when compared to Home Assistant. As a novice I have no idea how to mess with yaml files or whatever they are called. But in the aqara app I was able to do IR control of fans and have that setup on the app while the other automations are set on Home Assistant. and both automations work like a charm.

Now only time will tell if this is a solid hub or not. Planning on having this in my house along with some Lutron devices.

Not sure how this thing has good reviews. If I could negative star it I would. I tried 2 different devices and neither one of them would connect to the WiFi. They both would say it’s connected and ready to Bind but never goes through the process to actually bind. Follows all recommended steps to take. Follows all of the requirements. Only 2.4Ghz, set security wit WPA2. Made sure PW didn’t have special characters. Tried connecting to the Ethernet port. Nothing.

Again, this device is pretty much garbage and useless. Wouldn’t recommend this to my worst enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Key part of Aqara's System
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2024
There's not much to say about home automation hubs really - you kinda need it whether you wished you did or not really, if you want that brand's equipment to be usable.

I'm using some buttons, the presence detector and the door bell and it all just syncs up and works superbly.

Let's talk about it as a whole system - the app is superb, everything basically just worked out of the box as described pretty much and integration with IFTTT is very good across the entire range of products.

I've not got them working in Home Assistant yet (i'm just getting that installed), but will be doing that at some point and see how I get on, looks like it might work but we'll see - untested at this point.

Definitely recommend Aqara based on what i've used so far - packaging is super, products work well and the app is slick.
