While Google is known for its user-centric services that streamline our daily lives, it also heavily relies on its user community for valuable information, feedback, and guidance, especially from beta testers. To acknowledge and reward this participation, Google offers users the opportunity to earn Google Play credits, which can be used for purchasing apps, books, movies, and even in-app items via the Google Play Store. However, a recent issue has left users encountering an unexplained error code when trying to redeem their Play credits.
The Google Play Store serves as the primary app store for Android devices, and Play credits are typically redeemable for paid content within the store and in-app purchases facilitated through the Play billing system. This includes a wide range of Android content.
Moreover, the Play balance effectively functions as a digital wallet, allowing users to top it up via online transactions. Any leftover funds from in-app purchases are stored in this balance for future use. Google also enables users to accumulate credits by participating in surveys through the Google Opinion Rewards app, with earnings directly credited to their Play balance.
Recent reports on Google Play support pages indicate that some users have encountered difficulties when attempting to redeem their Play credits. Over 120 individuals have confirmed this issue on Google’s support page, with most reporting that payments are failing, accompanied by an error message featuring the following code:
While not yet a widespread problem, these issues first surfaced over a week ago on the Ingress Prime subreddit, a game developed by Niantic, Inc., the creators of Pokémon Go. Members of the Android Police team also faced hurdles when using Play balance as the payment method for book purchases. However, it’s worth noting that in some cases, payments have gone through without a hitch.
If you’re confronted with this error code, it’s advisable to consider an alternative payment method, such as credit or debit card, as Play balance appears to be the sole source of the issue at the moment. Although Google hasn’t officially addressed the problem in support forums, at least one user received word that the company’s “experts are working on it.”
While some users have experienced payment failures recently, transactions using Play credits have gone smoothly for others. Your experience may vary, so it’s wise to exercise caution when making substantial purchases with your Google Play balance. We will continue to monitor the situation and update this article if Google acknowledges the issue or provides a solution.
